Dad Memories

My father had no talent for home repair. In our basement, there was a small woodshop filled with tools, but I don’t remember him ever going in there. And for better or worse, I share this trait with him (as well as his love for carbs). Dad was kind and loving and walked through life with enormous grace. Any of your Dad memories you’d care to tell?

Coping Skills

One of the reasons I love ballet class is that the immense challenge of it forces me to stay in the moment, both mentally and physically. I get an hour and a half reprieve from the parts of my life that cause me angst. And afterwards, I walk into the day renewed. What keeps you present?

Enraptured

In the midst of these dark times, I’ve been watching and rewatching this luminous moment from the Tony Awards. The Band’s Visit opened on Broadway last year and now, even from this glimpse, I understand all the accolades. I’m mesmorized by this scene with Katrina Lenk and Tony Shalhoub. Let me know what you think.

Anthony Bourdain, RIP

From Barack Obama

“Low plastic stool, cheap but delicious noodles, cold Hanoi beer.” This is how I’ll remember Tony. He taught us about food — but more importantly, about its ability to bring us together. To make us a little less afraid of the unknown. We’ll miss him.

How to Eat Your Vegetables

The Farmer’s Market is overloaded with all kinds of beans right now. And lately, I’ve been fixated on marinating barely-cooked string beans in a balsamic vinaigrette. They last for days in the fridge, and they’re oh so good.

Love of My Life

A few days ago, I talked to an ex-boyfriend on the phone. It had been at least 20 years since we’d seen each other, and I was curious to catch up. The conversation was easy, almost like we picked up where we left off. He’s married now, and I knew eventually I’d be asked about my relationship status. “I live with a dog,” I said. “And I’m madly in love with her.”
