When I came home last night, I noticed that one of my lampshades was all askew and when I went to turn on the lamp, it didn’t work. Time for a new lightbulb? Too easy. So I unscrewed the shade, pulled out a flashlight to see if there was anything amiss in the socket, and realized I had no idea what to look for. The lamp (one of my favorites) is too big to fit in the car to bring to a repair shop. I actually panicked for a moment. And then picked up the phone and made an appointment with an electrician.

Is it possible that the lamp just needs rewiring? You can buy a kit to do that, and follow the very clear directions here:

OTOH, sometimes it’s just one more thing to do on a very long list, and your time is more valuable.
Update – so the electrician fiddled with a few wires and, presto! it worked. He also fixed a couple of things that have been on my electrical “honey-do” list for at least a year.
My new dog, who is still barely a puppy, pulled down my favorite lamp off a table. Now it’s askew, sitting on the floor of my guest room until I have time to try to repair it.
This lamp providing major illumination in my living room, so I felt urgency to get it done quickly. I’m so happy I did!
