  1. Jules says:

Love this artwork. My sentiments exactly. I’ll have a martini after a long day at work and watch a basketball game. Looking forward to the end of the dreadful ads everywhere.

    • wendy says:

Ads are so cheesy, as is the holiday. But it’s going to be a beautiful mid-February day in Southern California today. 72 degrees. Gratitude.

  2. JoDa says:

A set of friends (a couple, even) are hosting a non-Valentines party! It’s especially exciting since I am +1 with intentions, but able to go somewhere that the pressure of Valentines is reduced to a “friendly gathering!”

  3. Laur says:

I am working a night shift.
Will not be wearing scrubs with hearts on them.
Will probably go home tired from doing a job I love and glad that I no longer work for Godiva Chocolatier.

Make the best of things my singletons…we have each other!

  4. Jess says:

I was made redundant! Truly unromantic.

    • wendy says:

      What do you mean, Jess?

      • Tess says:

Just going through tabs I’d left open – for future reference, redundancy is the British way of saying laid off.

Hope you can use your newfound free time to do something fun before you start an even better new job, Jess!

  5. Nicole says:

I’m going to curl up with a good book, and pride myself on not allowing one of the most twisted marketing ploys to make me feel depressed.

You are never alone with a good book:)

    • wendy says:

      What are you reading?

      • Nicole says:

        Wendy,
“Presumed Innocent” by Scott Turow (the one the Harrison Ford movie was based upon). It has the tedium one usually finds in a legal thriller – but is also about a dysfunctional marriage and disintegrating career. The protagonist is dark and morose – but at the same time blunt and pragmatic. What are you reading? Tell us in your next post:)

  6. Lew says:

I’m giving a talk on the climate crisis to a law firm. Then I’m going to workout. Then will pack for a weekend in DC that will include a meeting, a college hoops game and protesting the Keystone XL Pipeline at Barack’s/Michelle’s place. Oh yeah, I’m going to call a woman I met online and then once in person for a 2nd date. First date was good–conversation good, especially. Not sure of the spark. I want to have a 2nd date because it’s not easy to find good conversationalists. Plus we both hate mayonnaise, so there’s that! The date would be Monday night–we already discussed it but I wasn’t sure I’d be back from DC in time. Now I’m sure. So that’s that.

I LOVE the card. I’m just doing some work. Although, in a moment of curiosity sparked by the news out of South Africa today, I took a break and did some googling of statistics on violence against women. It’s truly horrifying. So I’m holding all the victims in my heart today.

  8. mary c. says:

A friend is taking me out to lunch for helping her after a hospitalization. We will probably share some bubbly, but if not, I will be sure to enjoy it with some dark chocolate later. Bubbly and chocolate: that’s how to cope well with this annoying holiday!

    • wendy says:

I saw one of my dog-friend neighbors on the street today. I asked him if he got his wife flowers. And he said, “oh yes. I got her flowers AND chocolate. I don’t want one of my limbs removed.” I was glad not to have that kind of pressure.

  9. Lola says:

I am going home after what I hope isn’t TOO long of a day. I have been dating a guy for a bit, but he did not attempt to make any plans for today. We rarely see each other during the week, but still…kinda stings a bit. He left me a package with the front desk concierge this morning and texted me at 7am to say “did you get a package today?”. I expected flowers but it was a perfume set hastly thrown into a large white envelope that was then thrown into some sort of reusable shopping bag, like the kind you’d use for grocery shopping. I’m trying EXTREMELY hard to be grateful to have received anything (which I usually do not on this dreadful ‘holiday’) but something about this screams thoughtless and last minute and for some reason makes me feel worse than not having received anything. Ok people, please talk some sense into me!

  10. Kathy says:

I am going out with a guy I have been seeing for nine months now. I told him that I really am not into the holiday but would be willing to go out to dinner to a regular old place i.e. not a place that is over priced for V-day. We are going to a campy gay burger place. If we are going to celebrate the holiday, why not interject a bit of silly?

  11. Noelle says:

@Lola: I had an ex who said he wanted to be “friends” after he was caught cheating on me…and as part of his supposed agenda along those lines, he had one of his couriers show up to my office with a wilted bunch of flowers — on the afternoon February 15.

You don’t have to be grateful for such thoughtlessness. Give the damn perfume set to the Goodwill or toss in the trash.

I’m having a terrible day, anyway, and all this happy holiday shit is making it worse.

  12. Jalina says:

Well, for starters I’ve been home sick the last two days with a sinus infection. Upshot of that is that my kitties got some quality time with mom the last two days and I got to really chill out and rest between the nose blowing and coughing.

I pretty much ignore Valentine’s Day. I had to put my first cat, Spirit, to sleep on this day two years ago. So it’s a bit of a sad day for a whole different reason.

    • wendy says:

When my father was dying and it was close to my birthday, I internally begged him not to go on that day, because I didn’t want to have to link up those two events. Being the gracious man that he was, he waited a few weeks. Valentines Day is such an awkward event, and what a crummy thing to have piled on top of it. Hope you feel better, Jalina.

  13. Noelle says:

And it’s going downhill; one of the attorneys I do contract work for has suddenly decided to pull all his files — there goes my disposable income for the foreseeable future.

Then my Friday night practice session is “reorganizing” without me because I’m not enough. This came from the drummer who can’t keep 4/4 time for than two bars, which takes some kind of balls.

Anyone got any heroin? I hear that can be pretty happy stuff in small doses.

    • wendy says:

I’m really sorry, Noelle. That sucks.

    • Lola says:

@ Wendy and Noelle – thanks both for your comments. I appreciate the differing views and just going to let this pass for now.

Noelle – eeks, sorry for the day. Hope things are looking better for you tomorrow.

  14. Noelle says:

    Sorry… not GOOD enough.

  15. Stacey says:

Love, love, LOVE the card! It’s my new desktop wallpaper, lol!

I worked all day without a single acknowledgement that today was THE day to celebrate love…which means that I spared everyone my annual “Valentine’s Day Is a Crock” speech, lol. (Besides, they heard enough of it last year from me, so I thought I’d give them a break this year, ;-)).

I’m heating up some leftovers now, and “Gone With the Wind” is on my TV set, courtesy of Turner Classic Movies. I know they chose to run it today because it’s supposedly all romantic and everything (whatever…). I can stand it for today because I don’t think of it as a “romantic” movie. It’s a sudser, for sure, but it’s still way better than that horrid trash that they play on Hallmark Channel or Lifetime Network year round.

  16. Len says:

Completely agree with the card, because, well…take a look here:

Actually I posted it before today. Today was pretty empty, especially since I’m unemployed. Filled the bird feeders, did some paperwork for my mom’s taxes and cooked dinner. Then I’ll read some of “Origins” by Neil deGrasse Tyson, watch “The Daily Show,” and go to bed…alone, as always.

    • wendy says:

Great photo, Len. I always get a lift reading Neil deGrasse Tyson. The Daily Show was a happy part of my Valentines Day evening.

      • Len says:

Thanks, Wendy. Actually, it’s not a photo. I created it from scratch in Photoshop. Hope you also like the poem. It’s something I thought needed to be said. Ironic how pain can spur creation, isn’t it?

I’m just discovering Tyson myself, and I like what I see so far. Are you looking forward to his sequel to “Cosmos”?

        • wendy says:

I could listen to Tyson reading the phonebook. He’s so engaging. How was your march to the White House?

          • Len says:

Re: The White House–I think you’re thinking of Lew, who posted above. S’okay–I’ve found that if I don’t enunciate my name extremely clearly in conversation, people often hear it as “Glen.” LOL

Oh, and Tyson–yeah, you’ve gotta love a guy who appears on “The Daily Show” wearing a dressing gown and pink slippers and pokes fun at himself. I’ve always enjoyed Carl Sagan, but couldn’t picture him doing that. 🙂

          • wendy says:

What a difference an “N” makes. SO SORRY, Len.

  17. mary c. says:

Lola, Noelle, others who had a totally shitty day today–I’m so sorry. I know tomorrow will be better simply because it is not today. The annual Faux Luv Fest is over: It’s 12:01 am. EST, Feb. 15.

  18. Annie says:

    Hi Lovey,

Well, I am just home. V-day was a mixed bag. Lots of random bits and pieces. Mother drama, friend drama and then out with good friends after work to Arlequin near Opera Plaza for wine and snacks in the outdoor garden. Wonderful way to unwind. Chocolate treats and beignets to end the meal before we headed to The Mint on Market St. for karaoke. That was the end all = so much camaraderie and good feeling for fellow singers and dancers. Home on the bus, through Noe Valley and a quick walk through Bernal and am now snug in my bed after texting friends that I am home safe. I feel loved. 🙂 xo

  19. Dana says:

i work in a flower shop and i am always cheered by the many thoughtful men who shower their ladies with lovely arrangments. It makes me happy to see the delight they excite with their thoughtfulness. I am not in love with anyone right now but it doesnt jade me to see other people enjoying ‘love” and I think Vday is just fine despite the commercial hype.

today I am resting and took some time towrite some cards that I found on my Valentine day hunt for cards. Didnt find ANY good Valentines this year- but found other cards I liked.
