Cause and Effect?

Sarah Lazarovic

I’m not sure why I was so late to the party, but last month, I finally started digging into Downton Abbey. I binged through 3 seasons in a few weeks and couldn’t stop talking about it to everyone who’d already seen it. I was also terrified of finding out the plot, and tiptoed around the internet, which was near impossible for me to do, as I’m such a media hound. Miraculously, I managed to get through the final episode without any spoilers. I’m grateful to friends who showed such restraint. And I’ll try and pay it forward, so as not to cause any unseasonably bad weather.

Many years ago I ruined a Survivor finale for a friend of mine: She called me right after the season finale finished on TV and when I recognized her # on the call display, I blurted out, “Can you believe XXXX won!”

She was a big fan, and hadn’t seen the episode yet.

We had a really good laugh; we still laugh about it.

It’s interesting to see how someone experiences the episodes, and rewarding to not reveal details that would spoil the surprises – it can lead to interesting discussions.

I have a friend who loves to see movies, but doesn’t care at all if he knows the plot in advance. I, on the other hand, barely read reviews before I see a film for fear that some of the narrative will be exposed. I’m glad to hear your pal has a generous spirit.

I was a Lost-aholic. I DVR’d every episode, and made sure I watched it as soon as I possibly could, as I have many Lost-aholic friends. It’s kind of sad that I didn’t trust any of them to not spoil it for me, but when I think more about it, I was always so anxious to talk about it and dive into all the details that I also found it very difficult to not spoil it for others…I guess on some level, we often seek out our own kind, LOL.

Oh, and I’ve also had cookies for breakfast… I guess this winter-filled spring is my fault, 🙁

During Mad Men’s first few years, I used to wait to watch the episode later in the week. But now with social media, I’m afraid someone will post a spoiler, so I make sure to catch it on Sunday night.

One of my Facebook friends posted a photo from The Walking Dead, a show we both follow devotedly. The photo made it appear to me that he must have seen the last episode of the season, so I made a comment that acknowledged the death of a favourite character. My friend had not seen the last two episodes of the season, and so “instant massive spoiler”.

I actually did feel bad, even though it’s just television. I’ve made a promise to myself to be more careful in future about how I comment to posts about shows/movies/books, etc. It’s a little thing, but I hate being the party pooper…

Even though it was just TV, I was deeply invested in Downtown Abbey. I watched so many episodes over such a short period of time that I was practically living it.
