Stepping Out

elkevogelsang7A friend invited me to be her plus one at a film event tonight. It’s an intimate gathering at someone’s fancy house, and I’ve been looking forward to it. Our plan was that she would pick me up, and we’d only have to valet park one car. This morning, my friend emailed that she’s on a tight schedule so it might be easier to meet her at the event. Even though I have fairly good cocktail party skills, the idea of walking into the room knowing no one, was more than I cared to handle. So I’ve decided to drive far out of my way to hook up with my friend, so we can enter as a pair. Whew. Details to follow.

I’d do the very same thing.

As soon as we walked in, we headed straight for the bar area, where we were served delicious martinis in extravagant stemware. It was an event attended by film and political people, combining two of my favorite interests. It was a fun group of about 50 folks. I made the rounds, had fascinating conversations and was very glad I pushed myself out of the house on a weeknight.

Sounds like it was a great evening! Glad you got the chance to go!

By the way, walking by myself into a room of strangers in a party setting is paralyzing to me. I’d rather engage in public speaking or bloodletting than do that!

Many years ago, I was speaking at a film festival to a crowd of over 1000 people. Earlier that same day, I met someone for coffee on a blind date. And I vividly remember that I was far more nervous for the blind date than I was for the public speaking event. It’s interesting what makes us feel afraid.
