I’m relatively tidy. Or so I thought. Today, the new housekeeper I just hired cleaned my apartment for the first time. I prepped over the weekend by wiping down baseboards and even using a damp rag to remove the dust from underneath the sofa and the TV console. I was trying to make a good impression, because she is highly recommended and has a packed schedule. 4 hours after she had started, I returned home to see how things were going. The housekeeper looked at me, shook her head and somberly said, “your place is very dirty.” The good news is she’ll be back.

OMG. What did it look like/feel like after she was done?
It looked great. But honestly, I thought it looked pretty good before. She complained about how the tops of things were really dirty. Top of the mirrors, top of the picture frames, top of the windows, top of the washing machine. My former cleaning person must’ve never looked up. And I didn’t either.
ha! See…this is my fear about hiring a housekeeper…I’d have to clean before I could let her in!
My mother used to do that, and I would scoff. Now I get it.
My old boss hired a cleaning service and she told them that no really, she’s not tidy and they should send a few more workers. They laughed her off and talked up what an amazing job the two cleaners they were sending could do. In the end, they had to send two MORE cleaners to help and they worked for six hours instead of four!
I recently had my patio retiled. The workers were hauling debris and cutting tiles. It did leave a film over everything. And I kept repeating that as my ultimate excuse.
I can live with my dirt, to clean up for the housekeeper and it still not be enough… I wish I could muster the energy to get rid of the dirt under the sofa
I’d be too embarrassed to hire a housekeeper – there aren’t enough hours in the day for me to clean well enough to make a good impression on him/her!
This woman cleaned for 7 hours. And she made it clear that she doesn’t do laundry. An unbelievable professional. I have a similar feeling when I go to the dental hygenist, and she tells me to do a better job at cleaning my teeth, even though I really work at it every day.
Wendy, of course housekeepers and hygenists will always say there’s room for improvement…otherwise they’d be out of a job!
My hygenist has taught me a lot about how to better clean my tooth. She’s ruthless when it comes to plaque.
