After a harrowing and stressful year of preparation, the day before the oral component of my PhD comprehensive exams, I went to my local Chinese place for lunch. Instead of a fortune, my cookie had a slip of paper inside that said “You are capable, competent, creative, careful. Prove it.”
I don’t know if I’m strong, powerful, and beautiful, but I do know that the day after that lunch, I managed to prove that I was capable, competent, creative, and careful to a committee of cranky academics.
So I voted in your poll that affirmations DO work. Also, I kept the fortune. It’s in my wallet so I look at it every so often as a reminder. 🙂
