#StopGunViolence

Alex Nabaum

Excerpt from President Obama’s OpEd in the New York Times:

“Even as I continue to take every action possible as president, I will also take every action I can as a citizen. I will not campaign for, vote for or support any candidate, even in my own party, who does not support common-sense gun reform. And if the 90 percent of Americans who do support common-sense gun reforms join me, we will elect the leadership we deserve.”

    Two points:

    1) In an ideal world, we wouldn’t have ANY weapons—lethal or otherwise. But, humans—despite our big brains—are still basically frightened, selfish, greedy children. Hence poverty, crime, war, etc.—all the ills we use to rationalize our “need” for guns. As long as the human species refuses to grow up, this crap is going to continue ad nauseum.

    2) People who spout, “If some of the people there had been armed, it would have been different.” Sure it would have. Very likely they would have made themselves even more of a target and been shot sooner by the gunman/men. Or one would have seen another waving a gun and shot him/her, not knowing they were a “good guy.” Or…well, watch this video:

It’s too bad the news media don’t talk to Dr. Blair or police officers trained for such situations. But I imagine the NRA and their conservative lapdogs would simply dismiss them like they do anyone or anything that might in any way threaten gun manufacturers’ profits.
