I know it’s unwise to get enraged about things you can’t control. But here goes. It makes me livid when people walk on crowded sidewalks, or even worse, across major intersections, with their faces glued to their phones. I’m madly in love with my technology. Yet I don’t understand the mass oblivion when interacting in busy, public spaces. It’s hazardous. Please, someone, explain this to me.

Society’s current tendency toward self-absorption? That’s a theory and certainly not an excuse! It drives me crazy too.
I wouldn’t say I am in love with technology; I find it useful of course but am leery of its power over people (as in your examples).
Do you think people are more self absorbed now than in other times?
Maybe not. Human nature is human nature, I think. But we now have technologies that can facilitate our being our own worst selves in a way. Not always of course; it’s a double-edged sword, like so many things.
I don’t think technology is the culprit. But why is there such permission to be oblivious?
I work in the tech industry, and also find this maddening and unfathomable.
I beginning to think these things lock into the brain the same way drugs like cocaine do.
People write about going into some form of withdrawal when they’re away from their devices for even a short period of time.
That sounds like drugs to me – and not the good kind.
Have you seen Louis CK’s bit about cell phones? It’s brilliant https://youtu.be/5HbYScltf1c
