I spent many years as a cataloger in an academic library. In that role you do everything (call #s in books etc.) with a pencil. I adopted the mechanical pencil then and have stuck with it.
I didn’t really use pencils until I started my PhD, and I was making so many mistakes that I needed to erase things all the time! I dislike mechanical pencils, though. I like the smell of the old-fashioned ones and the way they feel in my hand…
I guess I come from a pencil-loving family. My grandfather was an accountant back in the day, and I remember that he always had boxes and boxes full of brand new, un-sharpened Faber-Castell pencils, and many perfectly sharpened ones as well. I can’t imagine not having pencils in the house, as we inherited his 100s of them.
My fav mechanical is Pentel 0.5mm side-click refillable, with #2 lead.
Love manual sharpeners. The pencils get pointier!
I prefer this type of sharpener too, although actually I always use mechanical pencils – they require no sharpening. I hate dull pencils.
I thought of you, Robin, when I posted this.

Are all mechanical pencils created equal?
I can’t remember the last time I used a pencil.

I’m not even sure I have a pencil in the house. But now, I’m curious to check.

I’m also an accountant’s daughter. Cheers to that!
