Succulent Love

Laura Berger

On my patio, I have a succulent that is spawning 2 new baby plants. I find it thrilling. It’s illogical, I know, but a couple of times a day, I check to see if it has grown. Right now, they’re about a half an inch. I’m not a gardner like a number of FPS readers, but for some reason, this little potted plant has me hooked. Perhaps you can explain it. (My apologies to those in the midst of snowy spring weather.)

My sister in law gave me a couple of orchids — oh, the joys of having someone who works at a garden center in the family — and I have been that way about them. I killed one, which I was disproportionately sad about, but the other is blooming and I was SO excited to see the buds. I came into the office one Monday and it had bloomed over the weekend. (It’s still going about three weeks later, actually.) So I’m with you, Wendy. 🙂

I love orchids, and almost always have one around my apartment. The blooms seem to last at least 4 weeks. My technique is underwatering them.

Oh, I get it, Wendy! My thumb is not green, but I have had some minor success with growing things. I was so happy to see that the rhubarb plant I was sure I’d killed last summer is coming back! Also, the other two rhubarb plants are growing. In fact, thanks to this post, I’m inspired to go out and see if they’ve grown since Sunday!

And I’ve been checking my chives as they get greener and greener.

We have such an long, active growing season in L.A., and it almost makes you feel like you could watch plants grow.

I know that when I take care of plants I actually feel more positive and happier. I think there’s scientific proof somewhere that caring for plants can improve your mood.
