When I first moved to San Francisco, Sam Shepard was the playwright-in-residence at a 99-seat house, neighborhood theater. It was there that he wrote some of his most notable works, including Fool for Love, True West and Buried Child, which won the Pulitzer Prize. I would see all of his plays, and knew I was in the presence of greatness. When someone this monumental passes, I feel grateful that he was around during my lifetime.
Wow, Wendy!! What a marvelous experience to behold firsthand.
He really was stardust.
“no regrets, coyote.”
I saw “Fool For Love” starring a very young Ed Harris and Kathy Baker, directed by Sam Shepard. 30 years later, I still remember what it felt like to sit in that theater.
A true loss for the arts. How wonderful to have been able to see those plays, Wendy.
Here’s a beautiful and personal tribute written by Patti Smith: http://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/my-buddy-sam-shepard
I had the biggest crush on him for years. The Right Stuff, you bet!
So sexy.
