It’s Tough Not to Be Girlie in L.A.

The other day, I heard two women having a spirited conversation about their “Brazilian.” I assumed it was some chitchat about a bikini wax, when, in fact, they were swapping stories about the latest trend in hair straightening. But you probably knew that. With my short, curly hair, I’m an anomaly in Los Angeles. I haven’t been near a brush or blow dryer for years. There are times I feel misunderstood, especially when “friends” tell me that a longer coif might increase my dating pool.   But I gotta go. Haircut at 4.

Why It’s Great to Be Single on Valentines Day, reason #4 from Amber:

Being single THIS Valentine’s day is great, because it leaves you free to celebrate the beginning of the Chinese New Year! My roommates and I are planning a Chinese potluck for our unattached friends replete with tasty Chinese dishes, fireworks and red envelopes with chocolate money inside. So, sorry married and attached friends try not to be too jealous!

Oh, the “you should grow your hair out to be more sexy and appealing to men” comments! I used to get those when I had very short hair, even though people who weren’t trying to sexify my life generally agreed that the short style suited my face. I think that to an extent, men are taught to say that they prefer long hair. As if saying they like short hair makes them less masculine, or more homoxeual, or something.

I currently have my hair long, and it has not increased my dating pool in the slightest. Maybe because I wear it up all the time. = )

You go ahead with your haircuts!

I live in L.A., and now know about this new Brazilian thanks to you, so congrats! You’re not the last SoCal singleton to know 🙂
