Single Advice You Would Like to Tune Out

April 24, 2012

“You’d have more luck finding a husband if you wore a little make up.”

To those well-intentioned people, who can’t help but weigh in, thanks, but no thanks.
Which piece of advice do you NEVER need to hear again?

What Gets You Up When You’re Down?

April 23, 2012

My dog in need of a walk. First corn of the season (grilled some yesterday). Cute spring tee shirt, which I noticed at J. Crew on Sunday, thought about it, went back on Monday, and it was marked down 40%. The hope that tomorrow will bring something surprisingly good (like that tee shirt on sale). People who believe they can change the world, and do.

Do You Have the Travel Bug?

I’m still pondering yesterday’s poll, about a substitute for romantic love. Could travel be a stand in?

Taking a Risk When You’re Single

April 18, 2012

I’m happy to announce the contest winner(s) for Get Wild, where I asked readers to offer something they would do in April to step outside of their comfort zones. Each of your responses really moved and inspired me. I’d originally imagined picking a winner based on merit. But I couldn’t choose one over the other. They were all that good. Opting for a low-tech solution, I labeled all the entries, folded them in half, put them in a big bowl, shut my eyes and pulled out 2 names. Congratulations to the winners:

New Wrinkle in Online Dating Pool

April 17, 2012

I’ve just read about Tawkify, a new direction in online dating. On Tawkify, there are no online profiles. You submit a photo, answer 10 questions, and if you’re “accepted,” a team of matchmakers interviews you on the phone, and then sets up a telephone date for you and your “hand-picked” match, which lasts for 10 minutes. If you want more contact, you both have to exchange phone numbers before the time elapses. After that, the line goes dead. The cost is $15 per match. Are you intrigued?

When You’re in Search of a Kind Word

April 12, 2012

Browsing in one of L.A.’s last remaining bookstores, I got my hands on Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon.  I follow Kleon’s blog for visual inspiration, and in keeping with his title, I’m going to steal an idea. In his book, he suggests keeping a “praise” file, which holds all the nice things that people say to you. It could be an actual manila folder, a digital one for email, or even metaphysical. We know how criticism tends to linger. Wouldn’t it be better to keep track of the compliments?

Friday, April 13, is the deadline for our CONTEST. Check it out!

The Power of Introverts

April 11, 2012

Reclaiming the power of solitude. This TED Talk, by Susan Cain, explains so much. Tell me if this resonates. (Unless you prefer to be quiet, which is okay, too.)
