In San Francisco this weekend, at my favorite designer boutique, I spotted amazing ankle boots, one pair left, which happened to fit perfectly. I turned to my married friend, who is chic, yet practical, and said, “I could get laid with these.” She quickly replied, “then get them.” Buying a condo has put a huge dent in my clothing (and accessories) budget, but I sure am tempted.

I spent Labor Day weekend, blissed out at a friend’s home in Montecito, an opulent community of Santa Barbara. Oprah has an estate there, and Kim Kardashian just got married down the street. We soaked in a hot tub in the moonlight, ran the dogs on the beach, and ate local bounty on the veranda overlooking a eucalyptus grove. Even with all the beauty and luxury, it was good to get back to the noise of city life.

I find this rant by the fabulous Louis C.K. oddly reassuring. And just the other day, I griped to a friend about not having enough sunlight in my apartment. Who knew I was such a cliché?!
For most 3-day weekends, I stay close to home, where I occasionally wallow in self-pity –
(Them: Happy couples romping by the sea. Me: Sweating in the urban jungle.) But this Labor Day weekend, I gleefully join the masses, heading off with friends to a BBQ and the beach.

Last year, when it came time to renew my print subscription to The New Yorker, I hesitated, wondering: will magazines even be around in 2012? But when the notice came in the mail today, I re-upped for 24 months. And you know what. It felt good.

Have you noticed how the light is changing? Fall is in the air.
